Milan often gets a bad rap as just a stopover on the way to Lake Como, but we’re here to tell you that this city is worth the time. Sure, you might be tempted to zip through on your way to something more famous, but Milan’s mix of history, culture, art, and even a little bit of football make it a destination in its own right.

Here’s your guide to experiencing Milan beyond the catwalks and fashion runways.

Things to Do: Milan’s Highlights (That You Shouldn’t Miss)

Visit The Last Supper (Book WAY in Advance)A must-see for art lovers and history buffs alike, The Last Supper by Leonardo da Vinci is one of the most iconic artworks in the world. But here’s the catch – you need to book your tickets MONTHS in advance. Seriously. Tickets are available on the official website up to three months before your visit, and they sell out quickly. So, don’t leave it to the last minute. You can book directly through the official website here. The artwork is housed in the Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, and you’ll have a limited time to see it, so plan your visit accordingly.

Climb the Duomo Cathedral

You’ve probably seen photos of the stunning Duomo, but there’s nothing quite like experiencing it in person. If you're up for it, climb the 200+ steps to the top of the cathedral for breathtaking views of Milan. If you're not in the mood for the workout, there’s an elevator option as well. Either way, you’ll get a 360-degree view of the city and an up-close look at the cathedral's intricate spires and details. You can book tickets for the Duomo's rooftop climb here.

Explore Sforza Castle (And Be Aware of the Hawkers)

Sforza Castle (Castello Sforzesco) is one of Milan’s most significant historical landmarks. The castle houses museums, art galleries, and a lovely courtyard.

However, be aware – like many tourist attractions, there are hawkers around the castle, so stay cautious and be mindful of scams. Despite this, the castle grounds and its surroundings are beautiful and worth the visit. You can check out the Sforza Castle here.

San Siro Stadium – Even If You’re Not a Football Fan

If you happen to be in Milan when there’s a game on at San Siro, don’t miss the chance to see the electric atmosphere at this iconic football stadium. We were lucky enough to catch the Inter Milan vs. Monza game, and even if you’re not a die-hard football fan, the energy in the stadium is infectious.

The stadium tours are also available for those who want to learn more about its history. You can check the San Siro tour and game schedule here.

Places to See: Milan’s Hidden Gems and Not-So-Obvious Sights

Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II

The Galleria is as grand as it gets. It’s the oldest shopping mall in Italy, and it’s lined with luxury boutiques and charming cafés. While it’s definitely a popular tourist spot, it’s also a lovely place to stop for a coffee or spritz, and just soak in the atmosphere. Don’t forget to look up – the glass roof and intricate mosaics are worth a moment of admiration.

Pro Tip: As you stroll through the Galleria, make sure to stop and spin your heel on the bull mosaic at the center of the floor. It's said to bring you good luck! It’s a Milanese tradition, and while it’s a fun little ritual, who wouldn’t want a bit of extra luck on their side?

Brera District

This district is the heart of Milan’s artsy side. With its narrow cobbled streets, trendy cafés, and vibrant art galleries, Brera feels a bit like stepping into a storybook. If you're into art, the Pinacoteca di Brera is home to a fantastic collection, but even just wandering the area gives you a real feel for Milan’s creative pulse.

Navigli District

The canals in Milan might not be as famous as Venice, but they’re equally charming. The Navigli District is known for its beautiful canals, lined with cafés and bars, making it a perfect spot to unwind after a day of sightseeing. The area is particularly lively in the evenings, with locals and tourists alike enjoying aperitivo hour.

Look for the Large Doors on Every Building

A small detail you might not notice right away are the striking, oversized doors on almost every building. Whether they’re wooden, metal, or stone, the grandiosity of these doors gives Milan a dramatic feel. As you stroll through the city, take a moment to look at the craftsmanship – it’s a reminder of Milan’s long history and attention to detail.

What to Eat: Milan’s Best Bites

Risotto alla Milanese

If you’re going to try one traditional Milanese dish, it has to be risotto alla Milanese. This creamy, saffron-infused risotto is simple yet incredibly satisfying. Pair it with a glass of local wine and you’ve got yourself a proper Milanese meal.

Restaurant Recommendation: Ristorante Nabucco

For an authentic taste of Milanese cuisine, head to Ristorante Nabucco. Located in the Brera district, this restaurant serves up excellent risotto alla Milanese, along with other regional specialties. The atmosphere is welcoming, and it’s a great spot to unwind after a day of exploring the city.

Perfect for a delicious dinner in a prime location!

Cotoletta alla Milanese

Milan’s take on the breaded veal cutlet is crispy, golden, and utterly delicious. It’s comfort food at its finest, and you’ll find it served in most restaurants around town. Pro tip: It’s even better when paired with a fresh salad or roasted vegetables.

Panettone

You don’t have to be in Milan at Christmas to enjoy panettone. This sweet, fluffy cake filled with dried fruit is a Milanese classic. It’s available year-round, so be sure to try it while you’re in town.

Aperitivo

Milan’s answer to happy hour is aperitivo, and it’s something you don’t want to miss. It’s more than just a drink; it’s a whole experience, often accompanied by small plates of snacks and appetizers. Find a bar around 6-7pm, order a spritz, and enjoy the vibrant atmosphere as you unwind.

Where to Stay: Milan’s Best Places to Rest Your Head

If you're looking for a comfortable and centrally-located hotel, Hotel Cavour is a fantastic choice. This lovely hotel is in the heart of Milan, making it an ideal base for exploring the city. The rooms are stylish, the service is top-notch, and the location can’t be beat. You can check it out here.

For a more budget-friendly option, check out Ostello Bello. It’s a lively hostel with a great atmosphere and a central location. If you’re traveling solo or just looking to meet fellow travellers, this is the place to be.

This is a fantastic option for those wanting a little more luxury. Located right next to the Duomo, you’ll feel like you’re staying at the heart of Milan. The hotel is chic, comfortable, and close to all the main attractions.

Final Thoughts: Milan Deserves More Than a Quick Stop

So, why not slow down and give Milan the time it deserves? While many people rush through it on their way to Lake Como, Milan is a city full of history, art, and a unique energy. Whether you’re into fashion, food, football, or art, Milan offers something for everyone.

So, the next time you’re here, take a step back and explore all the little details that make this city one of a kind.

You won’t regret it!.
